The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania expels Russian diplomat for espionage

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania has announced the expulsion of a Russian diplomat whose activities were in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961. This decision is related to espionage accusations.

«The Russian side was informed about this on May 24, 2024, during the summoning of the temporary Chargé d’Affaires of the Russian Federation to the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the order of Minister of Foreign Affairs Luminiță Odobescu,» the statement said.

Romanian citizen arrested for spying for Russia

Meanwhile, the Romanian prosecutor’s office, which is combating organized crime, has arrested a Romanian citizen on suspicion of spying for Russia. The man from Ploiești had been monitoring Romanian military bases in Tulcea county, which borders Ukraine, since 2022. He was photographing the movements of troops and their equipment, passing on this data to diplomats at the Russian embassy in Bucharest.
