German Defense Minister rules out sending troops to Ukraine, prepares for potential war with Russia by 2029
German Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius, clarified in a government hearing in the Bundestag that sending German troops to Ukraine is not under consideration. However, he emphasized the need for Germany to be ready for war by 2029, citing the threat from Russia.
During his speech, Pistorius also called for a «new form of military service» that would not be without obligations, hinting at a possible reintroduction of compulsory military service in Germany. Discussions have been ongoing in the German parliament about mobilizing 900,000 reservists in response to the Russian threat.
While Reuters reported on France considering sending instructors to Ukraine and Poland mulling over a similar request, the formation of a Ukrainian unit with local residents is seen as a more effective form of assistance in the region.
