Russian AI drones pose a threat to Ukrainian air defense

Russia Developing New Version of «Lancet» Strike UAV with AI

Russia is developing a new version of the «Lancet» strike UAV equipped with artificial intelligence under the name «Product-53». Journalist Alexander Kots revealed this information in his Telegram channel, citing the Russian publication «Komsomolskaya Pravda».

New Drone Capable of Independent Target Detection

According to Kots, the new drone can independently detect targets and perform tasks as part of a swarm of drones. The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) notes that the Russian command could potentially use these upgraded «Lancets» to attack the Ukrainian air defense system.

Effectiveness of «Product-53» Questioned

However, ISW analysts doubt the effectiveness of these drones in the scenarios considered. They believe that the payload of «Product-53» will not cause significant damage to key military targets.

Ukrainian Experts’ Assessment

In November 2023, Ukrainian experts also presented their assessment of the upgraded Russian drones «Product-53». They noted that despite being equipped with NVIDIA Jetson TX2 machine vision, these drones do not have full artificial intelligence for autonomous target determination and decision-making.
