Ukrainian Grain Freight Market Shows Stability with Prices on the Rise

Freight rates for grain transportation from Ukraine remain mostly stable, however, owners of «panamax» and barges have managed to slightly increase them due to growing trading activity in the market.

The Ukrainian Grain Association reported:

The freight for transporting corn or wheat from deep-water ports in Odessa to southern China remains at the level of 52-54 $/ton. Similar rates are observed in the direction of Bangladesh. Freight for a «panamax» vessel carrying wheat or corn to southern Vietnam remains at the level of 50-52 $/ton.

In the «handysize» segment, the freight for transporting corn from deep-water ports in Odessa to the eastern Mediterranean is fixed at 21-22 $/ton. Freight rates for delivering the same cargo to Spain and the eastern coast of Italy are 24-25 $/ton and 23-24 $/ton, respectively. For the destination of Tunisia, the freight remains at the level of 24-25 $/ton.

As for the freight for «panamax» vessels, rates for corn transportation from Ukrainian ports on the Danube to the Marmara and the eastern coast of Greece have increased by 1-2 $/ton, reaching 17-18 $/ton and 20-22 $/ton, respectively. For destinations in the eastern Mediterranean, the corresponding rates are 21-22 $/ton. Freight for these vessels to Israeli ports has increased by 2 $/ton, reaching 28-29 $/ton. However, rates remain stable for destinations on the eastern coast of Italy and Spain — at the levels of 26-27 $/ton and 28-29 $/ton, respectively.

Barge freight rates continue to rise: for the transportation of corn from Reni/Izmail to Constanta, they have increased by 1 €/ton, reaching 12 €/ton. Freight rates for a shipment of sunflower seeds from Reni/Izmail to Ruse/Silistra have also increased by 1 €/ton, reaching 19 €/ton.
