Discoveries of Ancient Temple and Ceremonial Structure near Chiclayo
Archaeologists from the Ministry of Culture of Peru have announced the discovery of an ancient temple in the archaeological complex of Los Parédoles de la Otra Banda – Las Ánimas near Chiclayo. This religious structure, over 5000 years old, is one of the oldest in the region.
The temple, with its impressive architecture of compacted clay walls and central stairs leading to a ceremonial platform, was used for religious ceremonies. Unique anthropomorphic carvings combining human, bird, feline, and reptilian forms have been found, along with colorful paintings on the walls.
Adjacent to the temple, a ceremonial structure from the late Moche period (600-700 years B.C.) was also discovered, featuring a large stepped platform with buttresses for rituals and ceremonies. The remains of a child, aged 5 to 6 years old, from a later period were found, shedding light on the ancient history of the region.
