Colossal Ancestor: Record Size of a Giant Dinosaur

Meet Patagotitan: The Largest Land Animal Ever

Today, the largest animal on Earth is considered to be the blue whale, however, in the past even more gigantic creatures roamed the planet. For land animals, the record belongs to a dinosaur called Patagotitan.

Patagotitan, a representative of sauropod dinosaurs, was a gigantic creature with a length of about 37 meters and a weight of approximately 70 tons, making it the largest land animal ever to inhabit the Earth. These dinosaurs had a long neck and tail, and their massive body was supported by four massive legs resembling columns.

Fossil finds of Patagotitan remains occurred in the region of Patagonia in southern Argentina. Paleontologists also discovered other large dinosaurs in this region, including Argentinosaurus. Some scientists speculate that Argentinosaurus could have been even larger than Patagotitan, however, the exact sizes of these dinosaurs remain a subject of debate as complete skeletons have not been found yet, and size estimates are based on individual bones.
