Cost of bypass road project in Odesa region quadrupled

Odessa-Reni Road Bypassing Moldovan Village of Palanka

Odessa region is once again focused on implementing the project of a new section of the Odessa-Reni road, which will bypass the Moldovan village of Palanka. The Regional Infrastructure Restoration and Development Service plans to allocate significant funding for this initiative.

According to information released by «Dumskaya», 34.5 million UAH will be allocated for the development of project estimates. The tender for the work was announced today, and the auction is scheduled for May 14.

The bypass road project was planned even before the start of the full-scale war. On August 4, 2021, the Odessa Roads Service signed a contract with LLC «Design and Construction Company «Odesprombud» in the amount of 8.8 million UAH. However, after the start of the war, the implementation deadlines were postponed several times, and on April 5, 2024, the contract was terminated.

It should be noted that the issue with the transboundary territory in the south of the Odessa region arose from the agreement dated August 4, 1998. Back then, Ukraine transferred 400 meters of the Danube coast to Moldova, where Moldovan port infrastructure was built. In return, Moldova promised to transfer to Ukraine a section of the road Odessa-Reni and land near Palanka. As a result, the road passed to Ukraine, but the territory around Palanka remained under Moldova’s control.

The regional authorities considered two options for bypassing Palanka: one involved the construction of a bridge across the Dniester estuary, and the other involved laying a new section of road about eight kilometers along the border, bypassing the Moldovan village. According to experts’ estimates, the latter option will be approximately 20 times cheaper.

The bypass road project was developed back in 2001 and has been in need of updating ever since.
