Thousands of Wild Osmia Bees appeared in Bessarabia
Thousands of wild osmia bees (Osmia rufa) have appeared on the shores of the Tuzlovsky estuaries in Bessarabia, which are covered with grassy plants.
This was reported by scientist Ivan Rusev, Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, a representative of the Tuzlovsky estuaries nature park.
Importance of Osmia Bees
Wild osmia bees are important pollinators of wild grassy plants, as well as exceptional pollinators of flowering trees and shrubs. This species has an annual life cycle. Osmia bees emerge from their nests early in the spring (late March-April) and mate. Their active period lasts three weeks, after which they perish.
«The wild solitary osmia bee is smaller than the honey bee and harmless to humans. These hard-working insects appeared simultaneously with the extremely warm air from the south a few days ago and tirelessly work in natural ecosystems, fulfilling their purpose. They provide a great service to humans by pollinating plants in orchards and fields,» emphasized Ivan Rusev.
