Microsoft Implements New Employee Evaluation System for Cybersecurity
Microsoft has announced that it will be evaluating the role of its employees in cybersecurity during their annual reviews, affecting their compensation. This decision was revealed by company vice president and president Brad Smith ahead of a US House Committee on National Security hearing scheduled for Thursday.
Improving Data Protection
These changes are part of Microsoft’s efforts to address concerns about safeguarding its customers’ data. In response to an independent audit report on China’s hacking of government officials’ email accounts, Microsoft is committing to revising certain practices identified in the report.
New Evaluation Criteria
Starting July 1, 2025, cybersecurity will be a key priority in employee evaluations during two biannual reviews with supervisors. For senior executives who meet regularly with CEO Satya Nadella, a portion of their bonuses will be linked to cybersecurity reviews conducted by the board compensation committee. An independent third party will provide an assessment to aid in the review process.
In the current fiscal year, senior executives may already see cybersecurity-related payouts reflected in their salaries. This new system reflects Microsoft’s dedication to enhancing cybersecurity measures and protecting sensitive data.
