Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili’s Support for Protesters
Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili expressed her support for protesters outraged by the bill on «foreign agents» and emphasized the importance of close ties with Europe and the United States for her country during her speech on Independence Day.
«This is a strategic decision,» she said to the crowd gathered at Freedom Square in Tbilisi on May 26.
«Today, as the specter of Russia looms before us, partnership and closeness with Europe and America become the key to preserving our independence, peace, and strength,» she added, noting the support of Georgian citizens for its accession to the European Union.
«The European Union has not been involved in any war since its founding,» Zourabichvili emphasized.
The President also noted that the main threat comes from Russian aggression in Ukraine and the growing popularity of right-wing radical parties.
In December, the European Union granted Georgia the status of a candidate, but hopes for quick accession were complicated by issues regarding Russian law and changes in the political situation in the EU.
